How I Design Custom Sets for Every Cake Smash Session
April 29th, 2026 by Megan
One of my favorite parts of being a cake smash photographer is designing a set that feels completely unique to your baby. No two babies are the same — so no two cake smash sessions should look the same either.
Every cake smash set is thoughtfully designed from scratch to reflect your child's personality, your style, and your vision. From color palettes to textures and details, this session should be as special as your little one.
It Starts With The Theme
Before anything is designed, we choose a theme.
Consider:
- If you want it simplistic. Think simple balloon or floral garland.
- Your preferred colors and style
- Whether you love clean and simple or bold and playful
- Any themes that represent you and/or baby… their nursery theme, first birthday party theme, their favorite food, story, song, activity…
Some parents come in with a clear vision. Others say, "I trust you — just make it beautiful." Both are perfect starting points.
Choosing a Color Palette That Photographs Beautifully
Color is one of the most important elements of a cake smash set.
When selecting colors, I think about:
- How tones photograph on camera
- Whether the look will feel timeless years from now
Soft neutrals, muted pastels, earthy tones, and balanced pops of color tend to age beautifully — which means you'll still love these photos long after the cake crumbs are gone.
Designing the Backdrop & Set Layers
Once the color palette is chosen, I design the full visual story.
This includes:
- Backdrop selection or custom design
- Textures (wood, fabric, balloons, florals, minimal props)
- Balance and spacing so your baby remains the focus
- A layout that allows movement, sitting, and standing
Every element is intentionally placed to photograph well from multiple angles — whether your baby stays put or crawls straight into the cake.
Styling That Keeps the Focus on Your Baby
The goal of every cake smash set is simple: your baby should always be the star.
Props and details are used to enhance the scene, not distract from your child's expressions, reactions, and joy.
Clean styling also allows for:
- Timeless images
- Easier wall art selections
- Photos that feel elevated, not trendy
Coordinating the Outfit With the Set
Outfits are just as important as the set design.
I help guide parents on:
- Outfit colors that complement the backdrop
- Textures that photograph well
- What to avoid (logos, busy patterns, stiff fabrics)
- Bare feet are always best
When the outfit and set are cohesive, the final images feel polished and intentional — without looking staged.
Designing With the Cake in Mind
The cake is a major design element — and it's always considered during the planning process.
I design sets that:
- Allow the cake to stand out without overpowering the scene
- Photograph well before and after the smash
- Leave room for movement and mess
Whether your baby gently pokes the cake or dives in face-first, the set is designed to look beautiful at every stage of the session.
Baby-Led, Flexible, and Fun
No matter how much planning goes into a cake smash set, the session itself is always baby-led.
Some babies:
- Love the cake instantly
- Need time to warm up
- Prefer exploring over smashing
I design sets that are flexible and forgiving — so no matter how your baby reacts, we capture authentic, joyful images that reflect them.
Why Custom Cake Smash Sets Matter
Custom-designed cake smash sets ensure that:
- Your images don't look like everyone else's
- Your baby's personality shines through
- Your session feels personal and meaningful
- Your photos remain timeless
This isn't just about a birthday — it's about celebrating your baby's first year in a way that feels special and unforgettable.
