How to Prepare for your Newborn Session

Booking Your Session

Newborn photography sessions are best booked during your second trimester to ensure availability. My calendar fills quickly, and reserving your spot early guarantees that we can photograph your baby during the ideal time frame—within the first 5 to 21 days after birth.

If your baby has already arrived, don’t hesitate to reach out! I occasionally have last-minute openings, and we can still create beautiful keepsakes, even with older newborns.

Timing the Session

The best age for a newborn session is between 5 and 21 days old. During this time, babies are typically sleepier, easier to pose, and more likely to stay curled up in those classic newborn positions.

That said, older newborns still make for beautiful subjects! They tend to be more alert and expressive, which means we can capture eye contact, personality, and sweet moments of curiosity. Every age brings its own charm, and I will adapt the session to your baby’s needs.

Preparing Your Baby

  • Feeding: Please plan to feed your baby right before the session begins. A full tummy makes for a sleepy, calm baby, which is ideal for a smooth session. If you’re coming from a distance, you’re welcome to feed in the studio when you arrive.
  • Clothing: Dress your baby in a loose-fitting outfit to avoid any red marks on their skin. Choose something easy to remove. I provide a wide range of swaddles, wraps, outfits, headbands, and props, so you don’t need to bring anything special unless there’s a personal item you’d like to include.
  • Pacifier: Even if your baby doesn’t normally use one, having a pacifier on hand can be helpful in soothing them during the session.

Studio Environment & Family Involvement

My Temecula studio is designed to be warm, clean, and calming for newborns and parents alike. I keep the temperature cozy to help your baby stay sleepy, so parents should dress in light clothing or layers.

A private client lounge is available with toys, books, and a DVD player to keep older siblings entertained. Comfortable seating is provided in the shooting area for parents to watch and relax while I work with your little one.

If you plan to be in some photos (which I always encourage!), consider neutral, soft-toned outfits for a timeless look. Avoid busy prints or logos so that the focus remains on your connection and expressions. I offer three backdrop options for family portraits that complement most home decor, making it easy to proudly display your images.

For sibling shots, I provide a safe setup using a plush wool rug, where older siblings can gently lie next to the baby. These moments make for some of the most heartwarming photos!

What to Bring

  • Diaper bag with diapers, wipes, and an extra change of clothes
  • Swaddles or keepsakes (optional)
  • Bottle (if bottle-feeding) or breastfeeding supplies
  • Snacks or entertainment for older siblings
  • Any personal or sentimental items you'd like incorporated

Relax and Trust the Process

Newborn sessions typically last between 1 to 3 hours, depending on the package you've selected. This allows plenty of time for feedings, changes, and comforting breaks. Every session is baby-led—I will never rush or force a pose.

Whether your baby is sleeping soundly or wide awake, we’ll create meaningful portraits that reflect their personality and this special stage of life. Awake shots can be just as magical—capturing eye contact, expressions, and interaction with family members.

Your only job during the session is to relax and enjoy the experience. I’ll take care of the rest!
